Lola's New Sweater

Obviously the only blogging I do is during school holidays! It has been awhile, but I have been quite crafty this last week! I have crocheted since I was a young girl, but it was always the same thing, zig-zag, bobbles, or single crochet. I didn't venture much beyond that. With Lola in dire need of a new sweater, I decided to get a bit fancy. For this little sweater, I used six small granny square flowers and a bobble trim. Isn't she the cutest little princess!

It's Been a Whirlwind!

I am so sorry that I have neglected my blog this past month, but boy oh boy has life been crazy. I have a TON to post over the next week so watch out! My oldest graduates from high school tomorrow, we have a new puppy, and I am back in school. I just keep reminding my self that this too will pass! I am going to start off my blog postings this week with some fun pics! The first pictures are of my graduate Austin. Because I am me, I took all of his graduation pictures. I couldn't bear to give this special task to someone else!! We used several locations. My favorite was Pebble Beach, my son's "The Warehouse" (by the way the building is condemned, but there were some great shots!!)

CAN You Stand It? UPCYCLE FEVER

I am trying to get prepared for an upcycle fashion class that I am teaching at The Santa Catalina School this Summer. I started goofing around with objects in my recycling bin and came up with this lovely little diddy! My 13 year old daughter was oohing and ahhhing over these cute can clips. There are going to be a great project from my students and they are guarateed to turn heads with these clippies!! For this project I used my old SIZZIX instead of attempting it on my Silhouette or KNK. Since the KNK can cut metal, I will be giving it a try soon! If you use your Silhouette for cutting aluminum do so at your own risk. I don't believe that it will have enough pressure to cut through it and it could damage your machine. If you don't have access to a cutter, just use a pair of tin snips or sharp scissors t get your shapes. I created the tutorial below just in case anyone else wants to give it a whirl! A few notes, there can be sharp edges so use caution (once cut and embossed the aluminum really isn't sharp at all, but if you have a stray little piece of metal on the edge, it can smart!! Try using various colors of cans. I came up with some great results with what I had lying around. Please comment below and let me know how your projects turned out!!

I am on the tail end of my Spring birthday cards. YAHOO! I will post a few more pics later in the week, but this momma needed to switch it up a bit. As a mother of a high school senior (I know I can't believe it either) I have nearly 1 million 1 graduation cards to make before June 8th. While this might be a tiny exaggeration, it sure feels like it. There are days, like today, where I dream of my son being a loner, sitting in the dark corner of the quad, but I'll be damned he has more friends than this mamma could count. I have tried to talk him into dumping a few before the big day, but the stinker won't agree. Oh well, I might as well keep the sweatshop open for a few more weeks!

I must say, my favorite part of this card is the Argyle Sketch Background that I created. You have to admit, it is SOOOOOO stinkin' cute yet hipster cool! I can't wait to put it on everything. Birthday Card Factory Running at Full Tilt!

I am just about OVER birthday cards. Every year I tell my self that I will make a few a month so that when April and May hit I am ready. Good intentions...but not reality! So between carpool, housework, and dishes, I got four more finished today. Here is a quick run down:
Julie's Peacock Princess

I LOVE THIS CARD! I usually go whimsical and leave the "elegant" for someone else, but I have really been wanting to use this design. The peacock came from Lettering Delights Denim Frills graphic set (link in sidebar). I created a cut file for my Silhouette and got to cutting. I backed the peacock with a square of acetate so that it appear that this delicate piece is supporting the whole card. I have been having a lot of fun with acetate lately (if you can't tell!). I actually didn't use annnnnyyyyy GLITTER today! It was really quite miraculous. I did however pull out the Swarovski crystals. The Moraccan design in the background was purchased from Silhouette Design Studio. This is sure to get RAVES!

Next UP: A Little Russ of Sophistication!

This little card is for my brother Russ. I went with a simple stair step card with some fun embellishments. I actually used the inside pieces of the Moraccan cut-out (see card above) to create the pattern on the front of the card. The monogram is LD Whale Tail (one of my favs) and the name RUSS is sketched using LD Cotton Candy font. To create a sketch file I simply opened up a new document in Silhouette Studio and typed in the words using the font that I wanted. I then went to OFFSET and did an internal offset. I sketched the outer line using a rust color glitter gel pen and the internal offset using glitter black. I purchased the gel pens and gel pen holders from AMY CHOMAS. Arrow Stair Step Card:

This birthday card is for my brother James. This is a center panel stair step card (download for free) This card is even cuter in person. I adapted my original center panel stair step template to make way for the "J." This step to for freakin' ever. It is probably the last time I will do it as it would've been just as cute the simple way! I used LD Enquirer font for the monogram. The sketch letters were purchased from Silhouette Studio. All of the arrows were cut using the most amazing invention known to mankind- scissors! I just wanted them random and I was able to do it in the carpool lane so it worked perfectly!!
LASTLY: Magnet Birthday Card

My brother-in-law made a request this year, so here it is. It is actually VERY simple for me and I felt kind of guilty, but this is what he wanted!! The frame set was purchased from Silhouette Design Studio and the font is LD Whale Tail. For the magnet I used a sheet that I purchased at Beverly's Crafts. I chose not to use the Silhouette magnet material as it is too thin for me. Because of the weight of the magnet though, I had to haul out my KNK to cut this part. In the end it came out pretty cute! The second photo shows the card panel that I put the magnet on so that we could write a note!

Purchasing SVGs vs. Graphics Sets = What works best with Silhouette Studio

With the dollar daze sale at Lettering Delights coming to an end, it is time to make those purchases. In addition to offering fonts, doodlebats, and graphics, they have recently began to carry SVGs. Now for some SVGs are great. If you use SCAL or MTC they are a perfect addition to your cut library. For Silhouette users they are a bit trickier. You can't cut an SVG in Silhouette Design Studio. You have to first use a program like Inkscape to convert them and then you can import them into SDS. You have to make sure that the layers are ungrouped and spread out individually all over the layout page. Then you procede to save as a new file type. When you "save as" you select DXF and when prompted you should only have checked "Use LWPOLYLINE type of line output" or the file will cause SDS to crash. The problem is that more often than not, when you import the file into SDS and ungroup them (to allow you to cut them seperately or modify them) the individual parts are broken into lots of pieces. For example, if you open a flower file you might find that the flower (which should be one piece) is segmented into 3 seperate pieces. This is why you have to seperate them and spread them over the layout page in Inkscape before saving them at DXF files. In short, it is a pain-in-the-_ _ s! I have also used their pngs to make cut files. I open the file in Inkscape and then select it and run "export to bitmap" When the export window appears, I select seperate by color, apply, and go back to the main screen. I then ungroup them and select the colors that I want to cut. This allows me to choose flat colors that will trace easier in SDS. I select the objects I want and then, under the file tab, I select export bitmap, chose where I want it to go and then click EXPORT. I can then open the new png file in SDS and simply use the trace tool to acquire my cuts. There is no regrouping of lines needed. I have found that I personally can work more efficiently with the graphic files. I am bummed because it would be so much easier just to open a cut file and go to work without all of the converting and exporting. I hope, especially with the Cricut drama, that Lettering Delights will consider offering the SVGs as GSDs as well. It would make it so much easier for Silhouette users. Until they do, I am going to keep purchasing the graphics as they are less expensive and it takes just as long to get cut files ready. This is just my two cents!!

Another Day of Birthday Cards

Well, to say that I am "Birthday-ed Out" is an understatement. I finished two more last night and still have 6 more to make and mail this week. The only thing that I can figure is that my family members spend much of August indoors!! So, one of the cards that was at the top of my list was my step-dads. This is the FIRST card that I made for him.

When I started this card I thought O.K. I will put some flags on it and make a simple dude card. (FYI: LD Whale Tail and Typeset fonts). I am not sure what happened in the process. While I love the way it came out, unless your step-dad is Liberace, it is not going to work. I have a glitter addiction that I struggle to keep under control. Obviously, I need a recovery program! This card is now for my sister Julie.

So, after my Liberace moment I went in the opposite direction and went for a laugh. I made this card using the Eat, Drink, and Be Hairy set from Lettering Delights. The card came out perfect and I am sure my very hairy step-dad will love it! (yes, I did sneak some glitter on it....I couldn't resist.)

Cupcake Birthday Card

I have been wanting to try an easel card for awhile and my little sister's birthday was the perfect opportunity! I designed the easel matt myself and once I tried a few different layouts, I finally got it to work well. I then added the card front. The cupcake came from Lettering Delights doodlebat set Hello Cupcake. I used it to create a cut file in Silhouette Studio. I then used Mon Cherie and Buttercream to make the HAPPY BIRTHDAY saying. I cut these out of vinyl and attached them to piece of acetate that I glued to the back of the card front. I popped up her name (also Buttercream) and some paper rickrac to set off the base. A little bit of chalk and a little bit of glitter and that's all she wrote! I will be adding the easel file in the next few days. Check back and download it!

3d Bow FREEBIE file

So here is my next FREEBIE. It is a 3 dimensional bow that you can add to virtually anything. There are three parts to the file, the base bow, the ric rac bow, and the bow band. To assemble the bow, place the ric rac bow on diagnally on top of the base bow so that the strips are alternating plain-ric rac-plain-ric rac etc... Start with the base bow pieces and wrap the ends to the back forming loops and adhere with adhesive. Repeat the process for the ric rac strips. When all loops are created, you can add a staple through the layers to secure them even more. Take the rectangular piece and create a circlular loop by gluing one end over the other. Use adhesive to attach the bow band to the bow. You will LOVE the result. I embellised mine further by adding rhinestone strips to the plain loops. You can use glitter, inking, or even punch holes along the plain strips to add some pizzazz. Please let me know what you think!!

Treat Jar

This was another quick project that came out amazing. I used a basic glass jar and added vinyl cut outs to add some pizazz. I saw a similar design on a blog awhile back and had to give it a go. I used more Lettering Delights fonts (see sidebar for link) and created the image in Inkscape. I then just cut it out using a Silhouette. It could not have been simpler. I will say that transfer tape was a lifesaver here! It helped keep everything in the right spot until I adhered it to the jar. I can't wait to use this basic idea to create other decorative containers. I just love it and I hope Mrs. Courtney loves it too!

Pinwheel Thank you

As my semester drew to a close, I wanted to make sure that my master teacher knew how grateful I was for her mentorship. She was simply amazing and I learned so much from her! This card was simple and fairly quick to put together. I started with the words using the THIS AND THAT from from Lettering Delights (link in the sidebar). I added the "you" using a different font (I will have to search and add it in the comments as I can't remeber off hand). I then decided that pinwheels would be the perfect Spring adornment. I did purchase one from Silhouette Studio Designs, but it was two dimensional and didn't give the card the punch that I wanted. I ended up coming up with my own version. I welded the "handles" to the card base. In order to give them enough stability to hold the wieght of the pinwheels, I place a strip of chipboard on the backside of each handle. It worked like a dream. Yet another oooh and ahhhh card!

Shelly Gets Sketchy

My students LOVE seeing themselves in a sketch, so when ever I have a few extra minutes I try to whip one out. This typically happens as I am eating my lunch. They tend to be very simple, but they do reflect the students' personalities. Most of the time I don't have time to make a copy for me, but every once and awhile I make them wait until the next morning so that I can get a scan to share with others. I will try to share these every once and awhile. This one is Hannah.

As many of you know I have been back in school for the last year. After teaching in the private schools for many years I decided to go back and complete my credential. It has been a wonderful year and I owe a debt of gratitude to my faculty advisor. So I decided that he needed a very special card. This card was created using the Pucker Up SVG set by Lettering Delights (see the sidebar for the link). With the Dollar Sale going on, I have been adding to my collection of amazing graphics, fonts, and SVGs. I don't own a Cricut, so the I have to convert the SVGs to another file format. This is my only complaint with these sets. They are lovely, but it is annoying that I have to manipulate the files before I can send them to my cutter. I am hoping that LD will eventually offer these graphics in other cuttable formats (especially since Provo Craft is making it impossible for people to use second party designs on their machines!) Anyhoo... I used Klic N Kut Studio to weld the word and create the card base. I used a combination of inking, chalking, and glittering to enhance the design. It is hard to tell from the photo, but I also used dimensional dots (homemade glue dots!) to raise certain parts of the card including the wing and the word. The eye also came out super cool. It is actually 4 layers of cardstock stacked and adhered together to create a faux chipboard. All of this to say... I LOVE THIS CARD!

Ain't nothing cuter than a baby face...well, except for these hipster onesies! This project was so easy! I simply took some plain white onesies, cut designs out on flocked iron on fabric (using my Silhouette of course), ironed them on and... a shower gift that got oohs and ahhs!

Leatherette Birthday Calendar

In an attempt to not forget a birthday this year, I decided that it was time for a birthday calendar. I LOVE THIS!! This is an 8x8 bound book that I created using scraps of textured boat leatherette. I used two colors of leatherette and created a reverse appliqué for the word "Happy" using the LD font Mon Cherie. I did use a cut machine to cut the word Happy from the leatherette. BE CAREFUL if you do this. If your machine doesn't have enough pressure, it can get jammed and ruin it. The machine that I used will cut through metal, so this was a cinch. If you don't have access to a super strong machine, you can use a Silhouette (or Cricut) to "score" the word into to top layer and then use a hobby knife to finish the job. BE SURE to tape the leatherette down really well so that it won’t shift. You can also cut the shapes out of vinyl and then use them like pattern templates. They stick to the leatherette GREAT and can then simply be cut out with a pair of sharp scissors. The cupcake is from the set "Sweet Nothings." I did add the sprinkles and stripes on the cupcake wrapper. I created the cupcake using adhesive vinyl (which sticks to the leatherette like glue), leatherette scraps, and hot fix crystals. After creating the cover, I then cut chipboard 1/2" smaller in Length and Width. I then used spray mount to temporarily adhere the leatherette to the chip board. Having the chipboard sandwiched between two pieces of leatherette, I then used my sewing machine to stitch around all four edges. **Note: When sewing on leatherette or vinyl be sure to use a long stitch. If you don't, you can create a perforation that can tear. The inside dividers are from a cut file that I created, as are the calendar pages themselves. The month labels were made using the LD font "Buttercream." -(this is one of my favorite, must have fonts when using a cut machine). I bound the book using my "Cinch" binder and binding wires. Masquerade

This is the latest pattern based project. I really love the way that it came out and so does Madyrose! The pattern in Simplicity 2577, with lots of modifications. Fabric is a royal blue satin. I used the basic pattern pieces, but adjusted them to fit her because she is soooo thin. I used a child's size 8 for this project. She wanted the dress shorter, so I adjusted for this as well. I also fully lined the dress to make it more comfortable for her. The end result was terrific!

Recomendations : I would recommend this pattern. I LOVE the pockets and it is pretty straightfoward. The directions are not the best, but if you have some garment construction knowledge, you can figure it out fairly easy. I would rate this pattern as an intermediate skill level. If you use cottons instead of satin, avoid the lining, and use premade trims or cording, I would say beginning intermediate skill level. Really check the measurements on this pattern. If your child wears a RTW 10, but her measurements put her in a 6, make the six and lengthen the bodice and skirt to get the appropriate legnths.

Poolside Shorty Shorts

I LOVE these shorts! My daughter has been begging for a new pair, so I thought that I would share with everyone! The pattern can be found HERE. Please note that in the European tradition, there are NO SEAM ALLOWANCES on the pattern. Simply add the seam allowance that you would like to the pattern piece. This pattern fits kids sizes 2T-12.

Materials:
Beach Towel
1" Elastic (to fit waist measurement)
Matching Thread

Directions:
1) First print out the pattern and cut the size that you need.
2) Add seam allowance. (If serging, add 1/4") You will only add this to the sides of the pattern, not the waist or hem.
3) Once you have your pattern pieces ready, you will place them on the towel. You can either cut as is, or deduct 1" from the hemline and use the binding on the towel at the hem.. (easy! No finishing needed!). Pin and cut out the pattern.
4) Stitch both sides at inner leg right sides together
5) Place right sides together and stitch at crotch
6) Finish top edge of waistband by serging, zigzaging, adding FOE, or bias tape. This will avoid the bulk of turning under.
7) Fold waistband over 1.5", pin and stitch, leaving a small section open at the back seam to insert elastic.
8) Measure waist, cut elastic at the same measurement -.5", insert elastic in casing using a safety pin. When you get it in, make sure that it is not turned and stitch ends together using a zigzag stitch. Go over this a few times. Pin the opening in the casing and stitch.
9) If you need to hem, you can do so now. Either serge the edge, or fold under. Then turn the hem up 1", pin, and stitch. I typically use two rows of stitching or a double needle stitch when hemming these, but that is not necessary.
10) OPTIONAL: You can add a shash bow to the front by cutting a piece of fabric 3"x32". Cutting this on the bias will help with excess fraying. Other options to finish sash are narrow hem, rolled hem, serged edge, three step zig-zap, or standard zig-zag. I like it best with a little fray on the edge! Find the mid-point of your sash, gather down the center and stitch to the center front seam of the waistband.

10) Hit the pool!

Tea Cozy Tutorial

I really love this tea cozy! I was recently asked to host a table for a women's tea and decorating was the best part. I am a bit obsessive with things and want everything to be just right. So of course my teapot needed new duds!

So here goes the tutorial! She is very easy to put together, just follow the pics if you need some guidance. Please note that the pattern is for a standard round teapot. If your teapot is shaped different, I would first adjust the pattern pieces to fit your hot lady! You can legnthen, widen, and adjust the openings easily.

Materials: 1 fat quarter or (1/4 yd) fabric, 1/4 yd thin insulated batting (cotton batting will work too), 1 1/2 yd piping, 2 yds bias tape (handmade or store purchased), one large button, 1/4" elastic, and thread to match.
1) Start by printing out the tea cozy pattern. DOWNLOAD ME!
2) Once you have printed it out, cut out the pattern pieces and tape to one side of your teapot. This is the time to make any adjustments. Remember that there are 1/2" seam allowances, so you don't want it skin tight! If you need to add, just tape a piece of fabric to the back and add where needed until it fits. If it is too big, just take it in a little bit.
3) Once you have a working pattern, cut out all of your pieces. You should have two of each pattern piece for fabric, batting, lining *(optional) Transfer markings.
4) Start by sandwiching your fabric together. Fabric, batting, lining (do this for each piece. If you would like, you can baste them together around the edges.
5) Stitch front to front at bottom and back to back at the bottom.
6) Attach bias trim to rounded inner edges. On the front piece, continue up to the top edge. 7) Attach elastic from mark to mark on both front and back. Pull the elastic a bit as you are attaching. Use zigzag stitch to attach. The elastic won't be visible from the front.
8) Attach the front to back at the side seams. If you like, you can sandwich piping in the seams!
9) Stitch together back pieces at top edge. You will now have a completed handle opening.
10) Attach piping around entire top edge. You may need to trim down your seam allowances prior to doing this to avoid bulk. When you get to the end, open up the piping, pull the fabric back and trim the cord so that it is flush with the edge. Then fold the back into itself . Top stitch top edge.

11) Attach bias trim to bottom edge. Stitch elastic to inside just as before, using a zigzag stitch.

12) Put your cozy on your teapot. Fold one front piece over the other until it has a nice fit. Pin and mark where your button will go. On one side create a button hole to fit your button and on the other side attach the button.

13) Put her on your hot lady and you are ready for one heck of a tea party!!

Topsy Turvey Dolls

I am going through a time of reminicing. Maybe it is because my kiddos are getting older, but all I know is that I have spent a lot of time remembering the way things were when I was young. One memory of my childhood was my topsy-turvey doll. I played with it until it literally fell to pieces. It was little red riding hood, grandma, and the big bad wolf. Oh how I LOVED that doll. So, when I was chatting with Madyrose about the doll, she looked at me, puzzled. Then requested that I make her one so she could see for herself. I started with Alice and the Queen of Hearts, then Cinderella. I am not sure what doll will be next, but I LOVE making them.

My boys have an interesting teenage take. One thinks that it might influence little ones to look up people's skirts. I didn't think about that, but the other son's suggestion to make a doll giving birth is NOT going to happen. Oui Ve! Love my boys!!

The patterns are almost complete and will be on Etsy when all is said and done! Each pattern will be a different character combination, but with some minor tweeks, you could make it into anything that you like.

This has been an eclectic creative week. Not really by choice, but it is nice to have a little change here and there. I was hired to design a logo for an organization called The Bridge and have not been motivated, but got it finished and approved this week. Over the years I have designed lots of logos. The nice part is that it is a pretty quick process, as far as graphic design goes, and gets your work circulated all over the place! It is not quite as flashy as the mural work, but fun nonetheless. So here is the latest and the greatest!

Hot Stuff

I have been a bit obsessed with fused glass of late. In the last month and 1/2 I have pumped out 30+ of the hot little puppies. Each one is different because, as you know, I get bored quickly! Each cab takes 9+hours from start to finish, including the kiln time. So I am not running a sweatshop, but it is still time consuming. I actually taught my art students the process and they made them as Christmas gifts. It was quite a hit and much better than the coil pot ashtray that I gave my non-smoking mom back in the 80's! If there is enough interest, I will post a tutorial, just comment and let me know! The only kicker is that you need a kiln :\!

A New Year is Here!

So, I have to be one of the worst bloggers of all time! Seriously, if I post once a month, I am on a roll. My goal for this year is to update much more often and hopefully twice a week at least. It sounds like a possibility, right? Well, I will give it a shot!

Yesterday was the first day back from Christmas break. Two of my three kiddos thought that it would be a wonderful time to be "sick." What this really means is that they were to lazy to get ready for school and thought that it would be much more fun to torture mom all day and then send her to her portable rubber room with a bottle of wine and a screaming headache! Thanks to my wonderful husband, the torture was averted. We have this no fever, no barf, or no green, then get your butt to school rule. It works well for him, I haven't had the same luck. When Connor was in 1st grade, I sent him to school when he cried sick. There was no fever, barf, or green, that is until he got to school and puked all over his desk (a table that he shared with 3 other kids) and the floor too! We aren't talking about a little bit either. The class had to be evacuated for 24 hours, I had to replace school supplies for Connor and his table buddies and there was also the fact that when it happened I didn't have my cell phone on. This meant that to locate me, the school had to notify everyone on my emergency list. This included family, extended family, neighbors, and friends! Talk about torture! There is nothing worse than your mother finding out that you sent their grandchild to school only to have them vomit everywhere! Needless to say, my hubby is now in charge of the NFNBNG Law. He is pretty good at it too. Sometimes I wonder if he is a secret CIA interrogator. He can sense a faker from a mile away. And yes...they were both big fat fakers!

Our Trip to Thailand Begins!

Well, we launched our vacation from San Francisco International Airport. Our flight left at 1am so we were able to sleep most of the way. We landed in Taipei at 5:35 local time and hung out for four hours. We roamed around the airport and saw some cool stuff, including a Hello Kitty terminal, gorgeous orchids, and some other cool stuff. (OK my English is a bit poor right now because I am wiped out!!) We arrived in Chaing Mai around 12pm local time and had a short bus ride to the hotel. It is so beautiful here. It is green and lush in a way that I have never seen before. The air is moist and the roads filled with motorbikes and taxis. It is so amazing to be able to experience another culture. This is sure to be the trip of a life time.

Tommorrow we go to see some of the Temples here in Chaing Mai. Now we are off to the night market. YEAH!!!!

Lemon Lime Sock Yarn

Ok, so the sock bug has me in it's grip! I decided to dye my own yarn so that I could get exactly what I want. This is one of the skeins that I dyed with a lemon lime colorway. It is self striping and is now knitting up nicely. I will post pics of the final product when I am finished. The base yarn is a cotton fleece (80% cotton 20%wool) by Lambs Pride. It is dyed with procion mx. These will be perfect for the summertime!

Sweater Pin How To

Materials:

Natural Colored Polymer Clay

Heavy Gauge Metal Wire

Adirondac Alcohol Inks (colors of your choice)

Adirondac Alcohol Blending Solution

Paper towels

Extra fine sandpaper

Satin Varnish (non yellowing)

For both pieces:

Form metal wire into desired shape and sandwich between two sheets of polymer clay that has been rolled out into about 1/8"thickness. *One will be round with a hole in the center and the other is just a stick!

Using an x-acto knife, cut edges into desired abstract shape. Press and mold until the pieces look organic.

Bake according to manufacturers instructions.

When it has cooled completely, sand until smooth and wipe clean with a damp cloth.

Coloring:

This is the tricky, but fun part! Using three different colors of alcohol inks, decorate the items. I start with the lightest color and layer until I like the way it looks. I use paper towels to rub color in, blot, and apply color. The blending medium gives you the look of small diffused circles. Use sparingly as it causes the ink to disperse in the area it is applied. If you want some defined lines, apply ink to an area, allow it to set and dry slightly and then burnish it off.

LAYER LAYER LAYER! The more you layer, the prettier it is.

Once you get the look you like, let it dry for a few hours and coat with 2 layers of satin varnish.

Delainee's Pink Hat

My niece was visiting this weekend and I couldn't resist making her something to take home. I hooked this hat for her, without a pattern, in about 2 hours. It is made of baby chenille and is so soft and sweet. She loves it and insisted on wearing it to bed. She asked me if I was making her socks, so there is another thing to add to my to do list. They are not nearly as quick as this little hat, but I will get them done.

Because I didn't use a pattern and no longer have the hat, I don't really have a pattern to post, but I can tell you that it is just a simple combination of hdc and fpdc. I had 5 fpdc going around the hat and increased between them until it was the right diameter and then did a few rows without increases and actually decreased a few stitches in the front where the brim would go so that it would fit her head nicely. I then tripled my yarn for the brim and placed it so that it would be centered across her forehead. She was here so I just tried it on her until I figured it out. It only took three rows of hdc, using two chains and decreasing by two on the edge to make it look right.

As you can surely tell, I am not a hooker, but a knitter, so this description is a bit out of wack. If you have questions, just email me and I will see if I can clarify.

I am at it again! Handmade knitting needles

I really need to stop adding projects to my list of to do's! I think I am driving my DH batty. Here are some of the handmade knitting needles that I am making. Most are made with dowels, some bamboo skewers and one set of chopsticks. I use beads, polimer clay (I varnish these so that they are shiny!), swarovski crystals and anything that I find for the ends. My favs are the circular needles! I am so proud of myself! The how to's for the circs are after the pics. Have fun and send me pictures of the ones that you make!

Circular needle how to:

These are simple, but be patient. First choose your dowel size and cut them to the legnth you desire. The sharpen only one end of each dowel. On the flat side, use a 1/16 drill bit and and drill a hole right in the center about 1/4" into the dowel. I then begin sanding down the dowel. It takes a few minutes of sanding, but getting it nice and smooth is vital. Be sure to round out and taper the end with the hole! Once it is smooth (finish with an extra fine grit), rub it with mineral oil and then rub in parafin wax and buff. The rest is a piece of cake. Cut a legnth of weedwacker line and apply a dab of E6000 to the end, insert into the hole firmly. Repeat for the other end of the line. Allow these to dry for a few hours before you use them!

If you are going to make tiny circs, just use a smaller drill bit and a plastic coated wire using the same instructions as above. The little ones require a very steady hand and I recommend using bamboo skewers instead of dowels.

What TOTALLY ROCKS about this project is that the weedwacker line comes in so many colors that you can use a different color to denote the needle size! Secondly, they only cost about 20 cents per pair! More money for the yarn stash!

FYI You can use metal stamps from Harbor Freight to impress the needle with the size if you like. (these are so cheap and I use them on all sorts of things!)

Oopsy Daisy

My neighbor is ready to have a baby any day now and as it goes, she was ready two weeks ago! I have been putting off making anything for her because I hadn't decided what I would want to do. It is her first baby, a girl, and she is a cool, hip young mommy. After seeing her yesturday, her belly close to hitting the ground, I figured that I needed to get on it and give up on some extravagant design. I started flipping through my mags and found this pattern in the new Knit It. As I always do, I did change it up a bit. The original showed a daisy with six petals, but because I never use even numbers, I cut it down to five and resized the petals. I made them a bit larger and longer and stitched them on so that they appear slightly raised. SOOOO CUTE!!! These are the projects that made me wish I had another baby, but only for a very very brief moment! OTN now are matching booties. These are my own concoction so we will see how it goes. Who knows, if she makes it another week, maybe I can make a sweater too!

Shabby Chic Felted Clutch

Well, here is a peek at the felted clutch that I have been working on. I am going to add some petite felted flowers nested in the chiffon and a wrist strap. I am please with my progress, but it is not yet finished. I am surprised with it's size. It is a nice roomy bag, not too big, not too small. I was thinking about adding some swarovski crystals to the chiffon too, but haven't decided. The toughest part of this bag was felting it just enough so it was thick and fuzzy, but also allowing my stitches to show. It is shabby chic you know! Any coments or suggestions would be greatly appreciated!

Eye Candy

I have been on a beading frenzie this week. I had the flu, so I spent two days in bed with my knitting and my bead box. The flu sucked, but finishing some projects made me feel a little bit better. As you might ascertain, I have the busy hands syndrome. I can't just sit in bed and watch the boob tube. Here are a few of the things that I made.

First is a sterling, crystal, and glass row counting bracelet. It is actually functional and cute. This one is a little BLING BLING, so I am going to make another out of pearls for a more demure look. You know it is bad when accesorize with knitting gadgets!

Next are more stitch markers. I made these to match my knitting bag! I love turquoise and black. These are slightly different than the others that I made. They are made using memory wire for the loop instead of splitrings. The benefit is that they can be placed and removed at anytime.

Here is a peak at the oilcloth knitting bag that I made a few weeks ago. Two great things about this bag.
1) It is oilcloth! DUH! I live at the beach and bring my knitting along while I watch the kiddos play in the surf. It doesn't get dirty and if it does, a handywipe is all I need!

2) Because sand and yarn don't mix, I put skein pockets on the outside that have grommet holes that lead to the inside. I never have to take my yarn out! I just pull my project out of the center of the bag, knit away and place it back when I am finished, or need to go chasing after a runaway skimboard. FYI this also prevents the yarn from getting tangled and keeps my colors separated nicely if I am doing fairisle. Well, I could go on and on, but that might be seen as boasting and I am not a boaster (right?- well, maybe a little!)

These are just some fun row counters! They are great for insetting sleeves or denoting decreases. They are light, easy to slip on and off, and a little sparkle never hurts! They make me feel like knitting a sweater...

I had the coolest idea! I saw these cute purses on sale for $3.24 and thought hmm, I can cut this to pieces and use the clasp, chain handle, zipper, and scrap vinyl for my knitting projects!

I can't believe I didn't think of this sooner! Maybe I did, but I have too many thoughts to remember. Anyways, here are some of the goodies that I found!

The felted slippers were my holiday project this year. I pumped out countless pairs for all of my family members! I use two methods. The adult slippers had heal turns and gussetting, but these are beginner friendly. The slippers in the picture are my daughters (they are only ones that I still have in my possession!). They are easy as pie and quick! These are the style I made for all of the kids, but it can be adjusted to make adult slippers.

Asian Inpired Felted Slippers

pattern is for a child's size 1-2

*NOTE These can easily be adjusted for width by adding to CO, but be careful not to add too much! I did make a pair for my husband at 36 CO and he wears a size 14-15 shoe . If you do adjust the cast on, remember to adjust the band too

pull yarn through stitches and secure.I put a few stitches in the end to make sure that the hole is closed completly and then weave in my tail. Since these are felted, the stitches won't show and it makes a nice smooth rounded end.I then do a partial construction before I add the band.

Stitch up the back. Stitch up the top of the foot until you have an opening that is 1/2 the legnth - 1/2 in.

Band- using 4 dpns, pick up 30 stitches along top edge starting at the toe seam. m2 (basically, you are adding two extra stitches at the center of the seam)

rows 1&2: k

row 3: k 31, k2tog

k until band measures 1 1/4"- 1 1/2"bind off.

Seam beginning at toe side of the band until there is a 5" opening

Felt until "the slipper fits." Stuff with plastic grocery bags to get the desired shape and allow to dry completely (2-3 days).

Add needle felted accents with roving.

To Frog or Not to Frog, that is the question...

To frog...

Ok, the gauntlets have been frogged and are now on the way to being some gorgeous socks. I decided that my hands wouldn't be warm enough, so I am going to try the gauntlets in worsted weight wool instead. I change my mind constantly, so this should come as no surprise!

My niece and nephew are coming to visit me this weekend and I am so excited! I hate to brag, but they are the cutest little guys ever! Here is a picture I took of my neice last month. This was after a long day of shopping and playing at the beach! She is still gorgeous, it is so not fair!!

As promised, here are some of my recently finished projects!

Felted Cloche with satin/chiffon peony, Felted purse with camelia accent, Felted do-dad bag, and Asian inspired felted slippers. As you can tell, I have been on a felting kick. Primarily because I wanted to practice my needle felting accents. I think that I have it down now. Time to move on!

On the needles

It has been so cold, here in Cali, this winter! My hands are freezing in the morning when I take the kiddos to school, so I decided I needed mittens of some sort. So, I just started this cute little pair of gauntlets. I am making it up as I go along, so who knows what might happen. The yarn is a gorgeous self stripping 100%wool sock yarn, but the needles are so tiny! This one may take awhile. I am anxious to add the crochet work to the wrist area! I might do that before I finish the hand of the gauntlet.

I am also about half way through a basic shawl for my best friend's birthday. We were shopping in Carmel and saw this at a boutique. She loved it and it was so simple, I figured it would be a quick gift to make. It is simply a stocking knit stitch extra wide scarf with cable ribs on the ends, one button hole and some gorgeous buttons. The ones that we saw at the boutique were 100% cotton (and $100 YIKES!), but I decided to turn it up a notch and use a silk/rayon. The sheen is stunning! Her birthday is in two weeks, so I will post a finished picture soon!

I just got this out of the wash! My sister had started this bag a few years ago, but between having a toddler, a baby, and doing all that she does, it got forgotten. When I was at her house this weekend, I decided to finish it for her. She had done the pink and was planning on putting a ruffle around the top, but ran out of yarn. I improvised and came up with this. It is the same stitch pattern as the hat I just finished, so I didn't have to memorize a different chart. I am going to add some hand painted wooden handles, give it a little shave, and it will be ready to go!

My weekend project!

We were visiting family for the weekend and had a three hour drive, so it was the perfect project! I finished it lickity split and it is so cute! With the arctic blast that hit Cali, it keeps my head nice and toasty.

Who is Shelly?

Well, here is the low down on me. I am a happily married mother of three. I have been a professional decorative artist for 10+ years. My expertise is in decorative plasters and mural art, but I do it all quite well.

I have been knitting and sewing since I was 6. I tend to be a free thinker when it comes to my needle projects. I sketch out designs and then put them together. I rarely use a pattern and if I do, I don't typically follow it to a T. I love playing with color and texture and am always a little sad when I finish a project. For me, it is as much about the creative process as it is about the final product.

I tend to be a fiber whore. If I like it, I buy it even if it means that I skip the Ben & Jerry's this week. I have enough yarn to supply an given store and am convinced that I will use it all some day. As you might have already guessed, I am a creative fiend. I always have multiple projects on the needles (knitting, sewing, and otherwise) and dozens dancing in my dreams.

I am the mother of three great kids. My two boys, Austin, 13, Connor, 11, and MadyRose, 8.

Austin is a great kids and hasn't become an obnoxious teen yet. He loves to skateboard and ski. He is quite the brain, but you would never consider him a geek.

Connor is a cutie. He is my adventure junkie and loves every challenge that comes his way! He too is very smart, but would prefer to bike in the woods!

MadyRose is our diva. She loves life and dreams of someday becoming Miss. Adventure! She has been dancing and acting since she was a pip squeek. Some day she will be famous, no doubt about it!
